Six months later, this cold snap seems never-ending. And while southern Europe is waking up at the beginning of spring, the thermometer continues to flirt happily below minus 10 celsius in Finland.\u00a0<strong>Vierum\u00e4ki<\/strong>, 200 kilometres north of Helsinki, was where the riders started the 83rd edition of P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne, in temperatures of -13 degrees!<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">This first round of the<strong>\u00a0Maxxis FIM Enduro World Championship\u00a0<\/strong>offered a completely different setting than that of the 2017 edition, where snow was scarce. <!--more-->However, that didn\u2019t discourage the 180 riders of the\u00a0<strong>Grand Prix of Finland<\/strong>\u00a0who raced relentlessly for twelve hours and thirty minutes, with sixteen timed special tests spread over more than 400 kilometres\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Polar Chill\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">\u201c<em>I&#8217;m cold\u2026<\/em>\u201d confessed 2017 Junior World Champion\u00a0<strong>Brad FREEMAN (GB &#8211; Beta Boano)\u00a0<\/strong>at the time control in J\u00e4ms\u00e4\u2026 \u201c<em>We&#8217;ve just had a long one-hour transfer that seemed endless! But I really enjoy riding in these really different conditions and I\u2019m still having a lot of fun!<\/em>\u201d This was an opinion which was not necessarily shared by some competitors like\u00a0<strong>Lo\u00efc LARRIEU (F &#8211; Yamaha)\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Christophe CHARLIER (F &#8211; Beta)<\/strong>, or those with troubles such as\u00a0<strong>Davide GUARNERI (I &#8211; Honda RedMoto)<\/strong>\u00a0who fell heavily in Special 2. The day began on frozen soil, the first tests of the day looking very different than those from the special test 4 onwards where the abundant snow depth &#8211; more than 60 centimetres &#8211; amplified the extreme difficulty of\u00a0<strong>P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne\u00a0<\/strong>2018 even more &#8230; \u201c<em>The settings I had early in the day were no longer suitable in the \u201cpowdered&#8221; snow and I struggled more and mor<\/em>e\u201d admitted\u00a0<strong>Matthew PHILLIPS (AUS &#8211; Sherco)<\/strong>, frustrated and losing time from the halfway point.<br \/>\nNeedless to say that under such conditions, the Finnish specialists (<strong>TAMMINEN<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>ERIKSSON<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>AJALA\u00a0<\/strong>&#8230;) rode to their heart&#8217;s content. Starting with\u00a0<strong>Aleksi JUKOLA (KTM)\u00a0<\/strong>leader until mid-day before\u00a0<strong>Eemil POHJOLA (Gas Gas)<\/strong>, a well-known former Junior rider in the World Championship, took over after test 9. After pushing hard to close the gap on the KTM rider,\u00a0<strong>POHJOLA<\/strong>\u00a0was unfortunately forced to give up on special test 13 due to a mechanical problem \u2026 as the sun dipped low on the horizon and night fell, the last 3 specials were run in total darkness!\u00a0<strong>Eero REMES (SF-TM)\u00a0<\/strong>brief leader of the scratch class, battled with his compatriots\u00a0<strong>Mika TAMMINEN (Gas Gas)<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Toni ERIKSSON (KTM)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Jussi ARVAJA (Sherco)<\/strong>\u00a0for top honours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMES &amp; Jamie MCCANNEY win in E2 &amp; E1\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The factory TM rider had to fight hard in the E2 class against another Finn,\u00a0<strong>Matti OIKARI (Honda)<\/strong>, while the Italian duo<strong>\u00a0Alex SALVINI (Husqvarna Zanardo)<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Deny PHILIPPAERTS (Beta Boano)<\/strong>\u00a0fought a superb battle throughout the day for the crucial \u00a0points of the final podium position.\u00a0<strong>Alex SALVINI<\/strong>, the Just1 rider, took 3rd and confirmed his excellent form and his very promising start to the season. But we must give a special mention to the remarkable\u00a0<strong>Deny PHILIPPAERTS<\/strong>\u00a0who scored a brilliant 4th place result, his best since his debut in the World Championship 8 years ago. It came as something as a surprise for Deny, who is one of the most friendly riders in the Paddock. We must also give credit to another E2 rider,\u00a0<strong>Joshua GOTTS (IRL &#8211; TM Electraction)<\/strong>\u00a0who also performed excellently to grab his best World Championship result; 5th place. These dark horses proved to be outstanding in the category, where\u00a0<strong>PHILLIPS\u00a0<\/strong>6th,\u00a0<strong>LARRIEU\u00a0<\/strong>7th,\u00a0<strong>OLDRATI\u00a0<\/strong>8th and\u00a0<strong>CHARLIER\u00a0<\/strong>10th, all struggled in the immense cold and deep snow!<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">After the retirement of\u00a0<strong>Eemil POHJOLA<\/strong>, it was\u00a0<strong>Jamie MCCANNEY (GB-Yamaha)\u00a0<\/strong>who was top man in the E1 category, despite the superb performance of his compatriot\u00a0<strong>Brad FREEMAN<\/strong>! The factory Yamaha Outsiders rider offered up a splendid and unexpected victory on the first day of this &#8220;fearsome&#8221;\u00a0<strong>P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne\u00a0<\/strong>GP. The Manxman held off charges from local rider<strong>\u00a0Jussi ARVAJA<\/strong>, who finished 2nd, and\u00a0<strong>FREEMAN\u00a0<\/strong>who \u2018scratched\u2019 the last two night specials against the Finnish talent!\u00a0<strong>Antoine BASSET (F &#8211; Gas Gas)\u00a0<\/strong>returning to the Grand Prix paddock after a serious knee injury that sidelined him for more than a season, proved he is as strong and courageous as ever, performing well among a talented pack of Finns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JUKOLA &amp; HOLCOMBE shine\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>Steve HOLCOMBE (GB &#8211; Beta)\u00a0<\/strong>honoured his Number 1 plate! He was indeed the best \u00a0of the &#8220;foreigners&#8221; in Enduro 3, thanks to his smooth riding which was perfect for the hellish conditions. The 2017 EnduroGP World Champion secured a brilliant 5th place against local riders\u00a0<strong>JUKOLA<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>ERIKSSON\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>TAMMINEN\u00a0<\/strong>who were impregnable today. The factory BETA rider scored important points for the rest of the season even though Gas Gas factory\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Danny MCCANNEY (GB)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Christophe NAMBOTIN (F)\u00a0<\/strong>also performed well, finishing 7th and 8th respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">The first day of the &#8220;great Finnish adventure&#8221; that is the\u00a0<strong>P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne\u00a0<\/strong>GP kept all its promises while also offering some nice surprises &#8230; including the victory in\u00a0<strong>EnduroGP\u00a0<\/strong>(scratch) of KTM Finland rider,\u00a0<strong>Aleksi JUKOLA<\/strong>, despite the withdrawal of the Austrian brand from the World Enduro Championship for \u201cmarketing\u201d and \u201ceconomical\u201d reasons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\">This freezing Finnish GP will continue tomorrow morning from 08.30 EET, heading towards Helsinki for a shorter second day (7hrs 30mins of racing!) It promises to be another intense and thrilling day!<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>What They Said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>Aleksi JUKOLA<\/strong>: \u201c<em>I\u2019m satisfied with having won this first day even if I am disappointed for\u00a0<strong>Eemil\u00a0<\/strong>(<strong>POHJOLA<\/strong>) who broke down. Now time for a good hot shower, a night of rest, and I hope to do the double and win my first P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>Jamie MCCANNEY<\/strong>: \u201c<em>If I had been told that I was going to start the season in Finland with a win in my class&#8230;I would never have believed it! Of course, if\u00a0<strong>POHJOLA\u00a0<\/strong>hadn\u2019t had a mechanical issue, I wouldn\u2019t be on the top step of the podium, but as we often say; to finish first, first you have to finish! In any case, it feels good to start the season like this even if I\u2019m feeling tired!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>Eero REMES<\/strong>: \u201c<em>The young riders are going strong out the front and it&#8217;s going to be hard to get the overall P\u00e4ij\u00e4nne victory, but I&#8217;m happy to have won my category! Tomorrow is another day but I have a good opportunity to make a small gap against my other competitors \u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-align-justify\"><strong>Brad FREEMAN<\/strong>: \u201c<em>Some people probably didn\u2019t enjoy riding here\u2026I loved it! Although it&#8217;s tiring, I really enjoyed riding in the snow and on top of that, I won two of the three night stages.
