Proving the most critical special test of the day, the Extreme Test caught numerous riders off guard as the steep uphill climb stopped many riders in their tracks.<\/p>\n<p>In the Enduro 3 category KTM\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Christophe NAMBOTIN<\/strong> enjoyed a mistake free day to claim victory on day one. Despite suffering discomfort from his recently broken finger, the Frenchman marched ahead to a 44-second margin of victory. \u201c<em>I really enjoyed today,<\/em>\u201d confirmed\u00a0<strong>NAMBOTIN<\/strong>. \u201c<em>The climbs on the extreme test were becoming increasingly difficult so I just tried to ride within my limit and make no mistakes. It\u2019s great to have won.<\/em>\u201d Behind the KTM rider the battle for the runner-up position was fought out between Italy\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Manuel MONNI (KTM)<\/strong>, Estonia\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Aigar LEOK (TM) <\/strong>and Sweden\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Joakim LJUNGGREN (Husaberg)<\/strong>. Gaining the upper hand on his rivals,\u00a0<strong>MONNI<\/strong>secured the second position to claim his best ever rest in EWC competition. Although crashing midway through the event,\u00a0<strong>LEOK <\/strong>fought his way to the finish and ended his day on the podium with third place. With\u00a0<strong>LJUNGGREN <\/strong>forced to settle for fourth position, Portugal\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Luis CORREIA (Beta) <\/strong>placed just two seconds behind the Husaberg rider to complete the top five.<\/p>\n<p>In the Enduro 1 class it was\u00a0<strong>SEISTOLA <\/strong>that secured an upset win. Capitalising on early mistakes by his teammate\u00a0<strong>Juha SALMINEN<\/strong> and France\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Antoine MEO (KTM)<\/strong>, the Finn held off\u00a0<strong>Eero REMES (TM) <\/strong>to secure his first race win since 2011. \u201c<em>I\u2019m so happy to have won \u2013 it\u2019s amazing,<\/em>\u201d told<strong>SEISTOLA<\/strong>. \u201c<em>When\u00a0<strong>Meo <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Salminen <\/strong>made mistakes early on I did my best to capitalise on it. I fought my way into the lead and just tried to ride as hard as I could without crashing. It\u2019s been a brilliant day.<\/em>\u201d Although leading midway through the day,\u00a0<strong>REMES <\/strong>was unable to hold off the attack from\u00a0<strong>SEISTOLA <\/strong>and slipped back to second position. Placing less than two seconds behind\u00a0<strong>REMES<\/strong>in third position, Spain\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Cristobal GUERRERO (KTM)<\/strong> proved that he\u2019s fully recovered from his shoulder injury that plagued him during the opening rounds of the season in South America. Unable to recover from his mistakes on lap one,\u00a0<strong>SALMINEN<\/strong> ended his day in fourth. Crashing heavily on the opening enduro test\u00a0<strong>MEO <\/strong>worked hard to recover from his mistake to end his day in fifth.<\/p>\n<p>In the Enduro 2 category it was the turn of\u00a0<strong>Ivan CERVANTES<\/strong> to top the podium. Feeling confident in the terrain and with the support of his home crowd behind him, the Spaniard took a well-deserved victory.\u201c<em>It was a tough day,<\/em>\u201d commented\u00a0<strong>CERVANTES<\/strong>. \u201c<em>Many riders made a lot of mistakes but I was lucky not to. I rode within my limits and thankfully was able to win. It\u2019s brilliant to have won in Spain and I want to thank KTM for their faith in me this season. Hopefully there will be more to come.<\/em>\u201d Although leading early on, Italy\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Alex SALVINI (Honda)<\/strong> got caught out on some of the tricky climbs. Losing time to the charging\u00a0<strong>CERVANTES<\/strong>, he placed as runner-up to the Spaniard. Struggling to find his rhythm during the opening lap, France\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Johnny AUBERT (KTM)<\/strong> slowly worked his way into contention. Benefitting from a serious mistake by\u00a0<strong>Pela RENET (Husaberg)<\/strong> on the final lap,\u00a0<strong>AUBERT <\/strong>finished in third place. For\u00a0<strong>RENET<\/strong>, day one in Spain ended in disaster. Getting stuck on the fourth and final extreme test, the Frenchman was forced to take a second attempt at the uphill climb. Losing over 50 seconds in the process,\u00a0<strong>RENET <\/strong>fell back to fourth position. Spain\u2019s<strong>Oriol MENA (Husaberg)<\/strong> rounded out the top five.<\/p>\n<p>In the Enduro Junior class, Australia\u2019s<strong> Matt PHILLIPS (Husqvarna)<\/strong> secured his second victory of the season. Leading the way during the majority of the day,\u00a0<strong>PHILLIPS <\/strong>claimed a comfortable 27-second margin of victory. Despite crashing in the final test of the day, Spain\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Mario ROMAN (Husaberg)<\/strong> ended his day as runner-up to\u00a0<strong>PHILLIPS <\/strong>with Italy\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Giacomo REDONDI (KTM)<\/strong>placing third overall. Britain\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Danny MCCANNEY (Gas Gas)<\/strong> was fourth with Italy\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Nicolo MORI (Beta)<\/strong> completing the top five. In the Enduro Youth Cup class, Manxman\u00a0<strong>Jamie MCCANNEY (Husaberg)<\/strong> recorded his third win of the season with victory on day one in Spain. Sweden\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Albin ELOWSON (Husaberg)<\/strong> was second with Italy\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Matteo BRESOLIN (KTM) <\/strong>rounding out the top three.<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Laia SANZ (KTM)<\/strong> ensured a winning start to her defence of the Women\u2019s Cup championship with victory on day one. Behind her Britain\u2019s<strong> Jane DANIELS (Husaberg)<\/strong> held off France\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Juliette BERREZ (Yamaha)<\/strong> to claim second position. Australia\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Jessica GARDINER (Sherco) <\/strong>ended her day in fourth.
